Chapter 19

Over the next two weeks, Estelle’s budding friendship with Logan had prospered. His green eyes and pale complexion gained an added attraction by their contrast to Toby’s dark eyes and sand brown skin. Logan offered to help her with the lab report for Chemistry and they had met once for lunch. She still thought of Toby at inconvenient times and wished he, or someone else, would tell her what was happening in the hunt for Zentor. Yet, who could she ask? Most of the Secret Supers had not seen her unmasked face and might be leery of trusting a stranger. Only Gecko knew her by sight since the occasion when they had rescued Rockette from Mr. Sunshine’s warehouse.

Ambling along the path to meet Diane for lunch, Estelle noticed the red-tailed hawk circling above the trees. Desperate for news on the search for Zentor, she called to Rockette, “Is that Fricka?”

The pigeon cooed from her perch in a pink flowered dogwood, “Yes. She comes here when Gecko has a class.”

“Where’s Gecko? I want to find out what’s going on.”

The speckled pigeon flew out of the dogwood and flapped into an oak sporting fresh leaves. “You’re in luck! He’s coming onto the campus. Wait a min and you’ll see him.”

Estelle halted. In spite of the lovely spring weather, few people crossed this quiet trail beside the empty tennis courts. As an excuse to dally, she pulled out her phone and took a picture of the spring flowers, the red azaleas lining the path under the pink and white dogwoods. Two minutes later, she recognized the skinny boy with the loose-limbed walk and a gray cap crammed down over his tight black curls. Gecko might be willing to talk since she had saved him during one of Mr. Sunshine’s attacks.

Walking to meet him, Estelle waved. “Hi Gecko!” She did not know his real name and he might not know hers.

Gecko nodded and pushed back his cap to stare at her. “Starrella! Guessed you weren’t dead.” He grinned. “What’re you doing at Goldman?”

“I’m a student here. A biology major.”

“Brainy, eh?” He shrugged. “Too pricy for me. Can’t afford more than one course a semester.”

She plunged into her request, “What’s happening with the supers? Any news about Zentor?”

“Heard you can’t fly patrols.” He quirked his eyebrows. “Didn’t Big Jag tell you?”

Gritting her teeth, she explained, “We’re not on speaking terms since I split with him.”

“Didn’t know you were seein’ him.” Gecko rubbed his nose thoughtfully. “Not sure what to say. He’s bin quiet, distracted like, since his last trip on Farleon business.”

“Maybe nothing to do with me,” she said. “But, what about Zentor? I want to help and it’s awful not hearing anything.”

He shook his head. “Nothin’ good. Fake trails. Waitin’ for his next strike. Could be anytime.”

Disappointed by the lack of news, Estelle walked beside Gecko in silence for a few minutes. He seemed content to continue in the same direction, and she asked, “Where’re you going?”

“Student Center. Jags are meeting in the café.
